Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ
I am so joyful knowing that your church has been chosen by the Vicariate of Yuma/La Paz as the place designated by the Bishop of the Diocese of Tucson, as the Holy Door of Pilgrimage entering into the Year of Mercy.
Pope Francis states that "anyone who enters this Holy Door will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons and instills hope". It his is wish that there also be a Holy Door in different dioceses throughout the world and Immaculate Conception Church has been designated for this holy occasion. Passing through the Holy Door symbolizes the passing from sin to grace. Always open, the door symbolizes God standing, waiting on the threshold to welcome us with open arms into His Mercy.
Passing through the Holy Door is a very important symbolic act performed by each pilgrim. Christ identified Himself as "the door" and when we pass through the door, we are thus required to leave behind sin and turn again towards love and forgiveness. Those who enter this door anytime during the Jubilee Year, will receive the plenary indulgence; therefore I delegate your Pastor, Father Javier Perez to preside over these ceremonies.
As you know Pope Francis proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy as a special time for the church. As you begin the year of the Diamond Celebration for your 150th Anniversary, I salute you and commend you for this historical celebration and therefore declare today, December 8, 2015 a Jubilee Year for Immaculate Conception Parish.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Rev. Gerald F. Kicanas, D.D.
Bishop of Tucson
