Celebrating 150 Years of the Parish of the Immaculate Conception

The Early Years of Immaculate Conception Church

Father Patrick Birminghman came to Yuma in 1866 and laid the adobe foundation for what was to become Immaculate Conception Church shortly after he arrived. All local Catholics were asked to participate in the church's construction by donating an adobe brick for the building. On May 10, 1868 the walls and flat roof of the Church were completed and named the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin.

Immaculate Conception Parish gradually outgrew the 1866 adobe structure and the cornerstone of the new church, constructed of brick was laid in 1899. And this new brick church located on Main Street served the parishioners until November 22, 1960 when a devastating fire destroyed the church. Masses were celebrated in the school hall until the new church was built.

The present Immaculate Conception Church was dedicated on February 16, 1964.

Immaculate Conception Church 2015

 Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Welcome to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, located at 505 S. Ave B, Yuma, Arizona.

We are also celebrating the "miracle" of 150 years as a Parish with a beautiful church and newly renovated school which continue to serve all God's children in the Yuma community and beyond. Our story in this historic anniversary year of celebration is written in the hearts of all of our parishioners, past and present. We have so much to be grateful for, as we remember the contributions of so many of our beloved brothers and sisters who made possible the establishment of the Parish of Immaculate Conception in 1865 and those who have sustained its vital mission since.

Anniversary celebrations are important milestones in everyone's life. They give us the opportunity to remember the past, to celebrate the present, and to dream about the future. All of our memories of the church and school of yesteryear, our experiences now, and our hopes for our children and grandchildren all come together when we mark this 150th anniversary of Immaculate Conception.

God bless you all and thank you for your love and devotion to Immaculate Conception Parish!
